It was revealed by Apple that 24 hours after the pre-ordering system was opened on 12 September 2014, they immediately received more than 4 million orders for both the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. This means that at least 4 million will receive their gadgets on 19 September 2014 on top of those walk-in customers.
For Apple employees, iPhone launches and selling days are always high-pressure, well-coordinated operations — especially for those charged in moving as many of the units as physically possible to ensure a record-breaking day as impressive (if not more so) as its record-breaking pre-orders. Needless to say, it's a stressful day for those in the employees in blue t-shirts.
9to5Mac has obtained Apple's retail gameplan, and it's a fascinating look behind the scenes of the company's on-the-ground workings. Some of the details are just interesting — "hold back 4 percent of overall inventory by SKU" in case someone's pre-order is busted out of the box and they need to grab another one.
There's also the fact that, despite this being the sixth iteration of this product, the line in several outlets is expected to stretch for blocks, continuing the "tradition" of having to "experience" Apple obsession properly instead of simply ordering the phone online — or else be deemed an Apple pretender. Of course, many of them are being paid to wait, or will turn around and immediately try to sell them at a markup. Or maybe the thousands waiting in line really are just determined to get their hands on a phone on 19 September 2014.
Overall, though, it's a great look at what the other side of the supply chain will be like. So please, if you're picking up an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus, be nice.
