Apple Releases iOS 8.2

iOS for Apple Watch
By this time, the mystery behind iOS 8.1.3 would have been solved. However, before everyone jumps for joy, Apple has taken another significant step forward with the major iOS version that had everyone talking about: iOS 8.2.

Released on 12 January, the new beta version of iOS 8.2 (version 4) can be installed right away on iPhones and iPads compatible with iOS 8 if the developers and anyone else have an access to a developer account. The update is available over-the-air (OTA), just like previous versions.

The main feature of iOS 8.2 is likely going to be Apple Watch and WatchKit support, although Apple is further expected to refine and improve the overall user experience in iOS 8.

Dug out by 9to5Mac, within Bluetooth settings iOS 8.2 beta 4 now makes specific reference “To pair an Apple Watch with your iPhone, go to the Apple Watch app”.

Apple had yet to confirm a dedicated Apple Watch app would exist and the company has also sneakily updated the animations of its Apple Watch overview page to show the device will be able to silence, ping and put connected iPhones into aeroplane mode.

Sadly, where iOS 8.2 beta 4 has been less revealing, however, is in what bug fixes it will offer to users still affected by iOS 8’s ongoing Bluetooth, WiFi and battery issues. No release notes for bug fixes have been revealed and may not be until official release.

Nevertheless, the major point of releasing iOS 8.2 is to bring a raft of fixes along with the new features. The less glamorous job of cleaning up outstanding bugs (now primarily limited to older iPhones and iPads) is expected to be left to iOS 8.1.3. This would arguably be a good thing after Apple’s iOS 8.1.2 release proved hopelessly self indulgent.

In further good news, iOS 8 adoption is also now showing steady growth. iOS 8 has had the slowest user adoption in iOS history, but Apple’s Developer Support page claims it is now installed on 68% of all compatible devices. Admittedly this includes all new iDevices running iOS 8 out the box, but clearly confidence in it is on the rise after a very, rocky start.

For the record all versions of iOS 8 will be compatible with the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 5S, iPhone 5C, iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPad Air 2, iPad Air, iPad mini 3, iPad mini 2, iPad mini, 3rd gen iPad, iPad 2 and fifth gen iPod touch.
