Now I've always been a fan of KyoChon Malaysia's Korean Fried Chicken ever since I tried their fares at 1 Utama. This time around, I had the opportunity to catch the launch of their latest branch in Pavilion. Touted to be their biggest KyoChon branch among the rest of their branches worldwide, it's with great interest that I went for their launch.

Welcome speech by Mr Kwon Won-Kang, chairman of KyoChon Korea |
KyoChon founder Mr Kwon Won-Kang started KyoChon Fried Chicken 23 years ago in Gu-mi, a small town in South Korea. The name ‘KyoChon’ is a combination of Korean word ‘Kyo’ (pure) and ‘Chon’ (village), and it represents the philosophy of the brand, which is, insisting on nothing but the most natural ingredients and healthy way to produce their food.

Congratulations on the grand opening of KyoChon Pavilion! |
Traditionally, fried chicken is linked to fast food. KyoChon is determined to change the perception and everything at KyoChon is made fresh, using only antibiotic and growth hormone free chickens, eschewing frozen chicken wings and drumsticks for chilled chickens delivered daily. The fried chickens are also MSG free and cooked exclusively in healthy Canola oil.

Mr Kwon also pioneered the double-frying technique which is generally acknowledged by fans of Korean style fried chicken, for longer lasting crispiness and less greasy fried chicken versus traditional and western styled cooking methods. Inspired by traditional Korean dishes and sauces, Mr Kwon was also the first to apply sauces directly onto fried chicken after cooking, developing the famous KyoChon Soy Garlic sauce which is loved by thousands worldwide.

Now I've been to Seoul, South Korea a couple of years back, and I must say, I understand why a large portion of 20pcs can be offered here at KyoChon. In Korea, they actually treat these fried chicken as snacks instead of the main course, and it is taken while the guys drink and chill out after work in the evenings. The first of the three signature series, KyoChon Honey Series Fried Chicken came in a beautiful honey glaze. The crispiest of the lot, this series had more batter added in, hence the crispiness. It was a very nice sweet savory affair, one which I really liked, and would definately recommend.

Now if you're a fan of original, or slightly flavoured fried chicken, then go for the KyoChon Original Soy Series Fried Chicken. They come in wings and drummets, or you could actually mix and match when ordering. Personally, I felt this series didn't shine as much as the other two. Nevertheless it was a good one, being crispy on the outside, with premium chicken wings and drummets being used, the meat had that certain sweetness to it.

A crowd favourite, the KyoChon Red Series Fried Chicken (Red Wings & Drummets) came in a fiery red presentation. Does it live up to its fiery colour? Yes it does, as the spiciness of the chicken is over the top, one which prompted me to finish up my ice cold drink even before I finished the meal. If you love spicy fried chicken, then go for this flavour. Again, I love the fact that KyoChon uses the double-fry technique, ensuring the chicken is virtually oil-free, a healthy option in my books.
