Old Tricycle Charcoal BBQ Yong Tau Foo opened their newest outlet in Aman Puri, Kepong recently, serving some very nice barbecued meat and yong tau foo for its customers. The history behind the outlet is a rather interesting one, where it all started with the parents of Old Tricycle‘s founder, Ray who have been in the yong tau foo business for more than 5 decades.

They first started as street vendor in Pudu, and plied the streets with a food cart fitted on a tricycle – just like the one depicted in the restaurant’s very Instagrammable mural. From there, the business grew and they eventually became suppliers. Ray’s idea of grilling yong tau foo actually came while having dinner at Gerai Makan Japanese BBQ. He thought maybe the same concept would work for his parents’ yong tau foo. Well, it did work. And cue the opening of Old Tricycle’s second outlet at Desa Aman Puri.

I'm all set to order some of the good stuff! |
Barbecued Yong Tau Foo |
Basically Old Tricycle serves everything related to Yong Tau Foo, with their specialty being the barbecued ones. Each item starts from RM1.50 onwards, grilled by the staff at the side. There are set meals too on the menu to cater for couples and families, where the Couple Set priced at RM30comes with 15 pieces of different items which include the usual selection of fried foo pei, brinjal, bitter gourd, okra and more.

They also have the more premium barbecue choices, consisting of mainly meat. It includes six pieces of the more premium items such as streaky bacon with capsicum fish paste, streaky bacon with pig skin fish paste and back bacon with fish paste. The premium items cost a tad more, at around RM1 more than the normal ones on the menu.
Good stuff here, streaky bacon with capsicum fish paste, streaky bacon with pig skin fish paste and back bacon with fish paste. |
The grilling is done by their staff, so we could just relax and wait for the barbecued meat and yong tau foo to be served straight to our table. I find the yong tau foo pretty palatable, not the usual wet ones, while the barbecued meat was rather salty. Of course, you could choose to have these with rice, which would go well together.
Curry Sauce with Sambal Chee Cheong Fun - RM4.50 |
Sweet Sauce with Dried Shrimps Chee Cheong Fun -RM4.50 |
Fried Onion Soy Sauce Chee Cheong Fun - RM4.50 |
Other than the barbecued food, Old Tricycle served some rather nice chee cheong fun, available in three variants. They have the original sweet sauce version, curry version and the unique fried onion soy sauce chee cheong fun. Personally I would go for the original version, even though the others were pretty good in their own taste and flavours. For RM4.50, I felt the portions were big enough to share, and it was pretty value for money.
Beancurd Barley drink and Freezy Cincau - RM3.90 (small) / RM4.90 (large) |
Coral Jelly - RM4.90 |
We ended the meal with the only dessert available on the menu, their Coral Jelly which consist of non bitter herbal jelly flavoured with goji berries with longans. We had two of their signature drinks, the Beancurd Barley drink and Freezy Cincau. Overall, it's a pretty nice spot to indulge in some barbecued Yong Tau Foo and meat, so do drop by Old Tricycle Charcoal BBQ Yong Tau Foo the next time you're in the vicinity of Desa Aman Puri, Kepong.
