Apple’s Spring Forward event last 9 March 2015 was packed with news and updates, including everything from expected Apple Watch announcements to the debut of the Retina 12″ MacBook, a price drop for Apple TV, the announcement of ResearchKit, and, finally, the release of iOS 8.2.
As expected, the headlines are improvements to HealthKit, including more granular control for users inputting data. That said the real areas of interest for many will be the bug fixes, because it appears Apple is finally squashing some of the major ones.
The greatest sigh of relief will be for those suffering from the so-called ‘GMT Bug’ which Apple specifically calls out: ‘Fixes a timezone issue where Calendar events appear in GMT’. This bug had swamped the Apple Support Communities with a thread that has been read nearly 350,000 times and received over 800 replies.
Furthermore, a long running bugwhich affects calls made over Bluetooth (notably with car kits) appears to be have been dealt with as well as Apple lists: ‘Fixes a Bluetooth calling issue where no audio is heard until the call is answered’.
That said Apple doesn’t call out any specific fixes for the ongoing WiFi problems in iOS 8 which have generated the single largest thread on the Apple Support Communities. It currently stands at over 600,000 views with over 1,900 replies across 128 pages.
If you are affected, don’t despair. Apple doesn’t always name drop every fix it makes – though if it is addressed, it would have seemed wise to do so in this instance.
As to why the new operating system was released together with Apple Watch, iOS 8.2 brings compatibility with the smartwatch. There will be a delay before the Watch goes on sale, but Apple will want iOS users up to speed as quickly as possible.
Lastly, it is worth noting that Apple won’t be sitting on the laurels of iOS 8.2 for long. iOS 8.3 is already in beta testing, so the remarkable rate of updates the company has been pushing of late appears unlikely to end anytime soon.
