It was a rather fun lunch at Zest Bar & Cafe @ Glow by Zinc yesterday when a bunch of Penang foodies and bloggers met up over some delectable Thai cuisine. Located along Macalister Road in Penang, it was my first time stepping into the hotel, and I was impressed by its artsy decor. A lot of effort was put in to make sure the ambiance is both pleasing to the eye and comfortable too.

Located inside GLOW by Zinc |
Interesting decor, with lots of art pieces hanging around |
Glow by Zinc is this very hipster-ish rather new hotel along Macalister Road, facing the junction to Abu Siti Lane and opposite Red Rock Hotel. The Zest Bar & Cafe is located on its second floor, serving a multitude of dishes off their ala-carte as well as set menus. We had the chance to try out their Thai cuisine, with spices making it worth our while.
Miang Kam - RM8 |
We kicked off our meal of up to 12 dishes that afternoon with the customary Miang Kam. Served on a platter with betel leaves, coconut, dried shrimps, red onions, peanuts, ginger and chili, it was a fiery hot appetizer. The cili padi used in the paste really lit our senses, followed by huge gulps of iced water. It was a tasty start to our meal though.
Tom Yam Goong - RM18 |
No Thai cuisine dining is complete without trying their Tom Yam Goong, and here at Zest Bar & Cafe we were served with two types, the usual red soup base and the other white curry type. Huge fresh prawns were served with the delightfully fiery red and spicy tom yam soup. Good and tasty stuff, especially if you have a need to clear your throat.
Yam Moon Sen - RM12 |
Som Tam - RM10 |
More salad types and appetizers came our way in the form of the Som Tam - young papaya salad with dried shrimps and spices, and the Yam Moon Sen - glass noodle salad with prawns, ginger flower and lime leaf. An explosion of sour, sweet, and spicy flavour hit your tastebuds the moment you try these salad.
Green curry chicken - Gaeng Keow Wan - RM18 |
Massaman Curry - RM18 |
Red Curry Prawn |
More Thai curry dishes came our way, this time it comes with the accompanied rice by the side. The Gaeng Keow Wan is this green curry dish with lots of coconut milk thrown into the mix served with basil leaves with a choice of either chicken or prawns. I find the curry a tad too creamy and not spicy enough, but I guess that's when you must order their Massaman Curry or the Red Curry Prawn for that extra kick! Cooked with roasted peanut curry sauce and potatoes, I do like munching into the peanuts with each bite.
Pad Kra Prao - RM18 |
One of my favourite dish that afternoon had to be the Pad Kra Prao dish. Spicy minced chicken or beef is sauteed to perfection with Thai Kra Prao leaf. Love the flavour of the meat, and the texture wasn't too hard, giving a nice spicy and flavourful bite with each spoonful. Served with rice and a sunny side up egg by the side, I could dine on this alone and be satisfied for a good lunch.
Pad Thai - RM15 |
Ah, the traditional all-time favourite Pad Thai. Here at Zest Bar, the wok fried Thai noodles is served with prawns, beansprouts, bean curd wrapped n egg Pattaya style. Served with peanuts by the side, that extra crunch increased the flavours and taste of the Pad Thai a couple folds. I like the fact they made it savoury and not too sweet.
Khanom Khao Mao - RM7 |
Sang Kaya Fugtong - RM7 |
We ended our feast with some sweet and savoury dessert in the form of the fried bananas Khanom Khao Mao and the steamed sweet pumpkin Sang Kaya Fugtong. The very sweet fried bananas were deep fried to a crisp with grated coconut and sticky rice, which went really well with my sweet tooth palate. I did not warm up to the steamed sweet pumpkin with custard and coconut milk though, but that's just me. Do drop by Zest Bar & Cafe @ GLOW By Zinc, Macalister Road Penang to try out their fares the next time you're in the vicinity!
