We are finally going to see the long-rumored update to Apple’s set-top box this fall, reports BuzzFeed’s John Paczkowski. The well-connected journalist says sources have informed him that the company plans to introduce a new Apple TV in September.
The report also indicates that several previous rumors regarding the new box were right-on, including that the device will ship with a new touch-based remote, feature an A8 processor under the hood, more onboard storage, a new operating system that will support an App Store, APIs for developers and more. Essentially, the new Apple TV will be a huge departure from the current iteration, as Apple tries to take full advantage of the device. The report also states that the new box will be slimmer than the current model, too.
However, what won’t be at this September’s event is the streaming-based TV service that’s been rumored quite a bit recently as well. The report indicates that a late-2015 launch is possible, but that Apple unveiling the service in 2016 is much more likely.
It sounds like everything is on track for September, though. The device will likely share an event with this year’s new iPhones, just ahead of the holiday shopping season, and is expected to facilitate Apple’s new TV service, which is also due out this fall.
