Volt II - Looking sharp to conquer the US Market (And why, oh why can't the Opel Ampera have its own Second Iteration?) |
Tesla Edition
Some 10.000 plug-ins were sold in the US last month, which represents a 16% decrease YoY, with the YTD EV Share at 0,64%, behind the 0,73% of last year.
The Tesla Model S continues to push the EV Market almost alone, with all the other major players presenting losses regarding the same month last year, with only three models in the four digit area (Model S, Leaf and Volt).
With the Top 2 representing 38% of the whole market, a curious fact is that both are pure electrics, right now BEV's represent 63% of sales this year, far better from the 27% in 2012.
It is somewhat ironic that now that Europe is seeing an uptick in PHEV sales, the US are going the other way around, as we can see in the yearly numbers since 2012: Pure electrics had 27% share in 2012, the following year that number rose to 49%, 55% in 2014 and now 63%...Tesla influence has surely something to do with it, but also the decline in sales of the Chevy Volt (23.4k units in 2012, 23k in '13, 19k last year and 5.6k now), with the upcoming arrival of the 2nd Gen Volt and Model X, it will be interesting to see if PHEV's return to have the majority of sales or if BEV's resist and end the year as the dominant technology.
Looking at the rankings, there are no significant changes in the models chart, but there is an important change in the manufacturers: With Tesla growing their lead over the competition (20%, one percent higher than in May), Nissan (18%) returned to Second, relegating Ford to #3, with 17% share.
