Report claims iPhone 6s will feature 12-megapixel camera with 5-element lens, wider aperture

The camera on the next iPhone will have a bigger sensor that can take in more light, and a lens that's designed to work with that improved sensor.

Business Insider claims that they’re also hearing that the next generation iPhones will sport a 12-megapixel camera from their source in Apple’s supply chain. The report also provides new details about the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus camera.

This means we can expect the iPhone 6S to capture higher quality photos than the iPhone 6.Apple is currently ordering suppliers to produce five-element lenses for the iPhone 6S that are designed to work with 12-megapixel camera sensors, a person within Apple’s supply chain told Business Insider. These components are said to be in the mass production stage and are on schedule, this source said.The report also claims that the lens for the iPhone 6S will be made of five elements just like the one found in iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. According to the report, Apple is considering a six-element lens for the iPhone 7, which will be launched next year.

Based on Business Insider’s report, it looks like in addition to the 12-megapixel camera, iPhone 6s camera lens will have a wider aperture, which is great news as it would also mean significantly improved image quality in low-light. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus camera lens have a f/2.2 aperture. It remains to be seen if the new iPhones will come with a camera lens with f/2.0 aperture or even wider aperture to bring them on par with the Samsung Galaxy S6 and LG G4, which come with a f/1.8 and f/1.9 aperture.
