Instagram Direct adds Snapchat-like visual chat threads and more in latest update

Tuesday, Facebook-owned Instagram launched some notable improvements for its private-messaging feature, called Instagram Direct.

Since then, updates for the service have been few and far between, almost to the point of being completely neglected. That changes today, though, as Instagram Direct picks up a few major feature additions in the latest update. With the update, Instagram is bumped up to version 7.5, and it’s available now in the iOS App Store.

With version 7.5, Instagram Direct users can now share posts that they see on Instagram directly as a message to one of their contacts, simply by tapping on the arrow underneath the post. Once that message is sent, the other Instagram user (or users) can then immediately send a photo back to keep the conversation going, exactly like Snapchat.

The update also includes the ability to name group chats, which Instagram aims to help make finding them easier.

It’s worth noting that Instagram actually says that 85 million users take advantage of Direct to send a variety of content, whether that’s “inside jokes, family videos, photos from road trips and other moments meant only for a handful of people.”

Instagram is localized in English, Bokmål, Norwegian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish, Tagalog, Thai, Traditional Chinese, Turkish and Vietnamese.
