Apple's new software update for their iPhone and iPad product lines is finally here. But what everyone saw on stage at Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) last June was more than just a yearly update to Apple’s mobile OS. It’s a glimpse at how Apple’s operating systems are being unified as it builds out new devices and platforms.
The headline feature in iOS 9 is intelligence. Not only is Siri smarter and more aware — she can set up reminders, for example — but Apple has created an entirely new feature called Proactive. It’s a new assistant that will learn user behaviors and predict what they are interested in doing with their phone.
Proactive can also do things like suggest who unknown callers might be when a number pops up on the screen. It might suggest apps that users tend to use during certain times of day—or even suggest locations nearby. There’s also an API for search, an update that was met with wild applause from the crowd. This kind of functionality will feel familiar to Google Now users, but for iOS fans, it’s a major update.

To update to iOS 9, following the following steps.
- First, back up your iPhone. On the off chance anything goes wrong, you'll be able to restore your iPhone to its most recent backup. If you have iCloud storage space left your phone automatically backs up whenever your iPhone is plugged in and connected to Wi-Fi. But, if you want to do it manually, head over to Settings > iCloud >Backup >Backup Now. You can also backup your iPhone by plugging it in to your computer and connecting to iTunes.
- Once that's done, tap the Settings icon on your iPhone's home screen.
- Then press the General category and select Software Update. This will prompt your phone to check for the latest updates.
- When iOS 9 appears, press the Download and Install button. You may be prompted to enter your passcode before you can continue.
- Read and agree to the terms and conditions and then your download should automatically start.
- Don't panic if you're having trouble installing the update. Often times, the network gets clogged because everyone is trying to download the update at the same time. You may just have to wait a while to proceed with your download.
