Umeshu Sushi & Bar @ Glenmarie Shah Alam

My previous company used to be at Glenmarie Shah Alam, and it has always been a harrowing time looking for good food during lunch hours. It's the usual economy rice for us most of the time, but with the recent opening of various new outlets in the vicinity, diners are spoilt for choice. I've had the chance to drop by Umeshu Sushi & Bar the other day, and my, it was good.

Comfy interior

Umeshu Sushi & Bar serves a wide variety of sushis, Japanese appetisers, fusion food, and snacks. What sets them apart from the crowd would be the affordably priced dishes off their menu. In fact, they even have these super value set meals for breakfast and lunch, priced from RM6 onwards. The interior itself is very comfortable, with a Japanese theme to the whole place.

Soba Avocado Salad - RM10.90

We kicked off dinner at Umeshu with their appetiser salads, the Salmon Avocado Salad and the Soba Avocado Salad. Similar but different, both had generous servings of creamy avocado in them. The salmon chunks were rather nice, which I tried even though I'm not the sashimi type. The cold buckwheat noodles in the soba salad tasted refreshingly good, most probably due to the homemade goma dressing which I love.

Salmon Zukushi - RM16.90

Aburi Salmon Sushi

Umeshu serves some of the more comprehensive salmon sushis I've seen in a while. It was a feast of salmon sushis, from the Salmon Zukushi, to Aburi Salmon Sushi and many more. The sushis are presented in the traditional way, with some dishes coming in a modern fusion creation. For those who wants their salmon in another style other than raw, try the Aburi Salmon Sushi. Sear flamed on the top, the salmon remained raw underneath, served on a bed of japanese rice.

Umeshu Special Fried Salmon Roll - RM13.90
Umeshu Special Fried Salmon Roll -  RM13.90

More sushi rolls, with the Assorted Irodori and Umeshu Special Fried Salmon Roll coming in next. Each of the sushi rolls were very thick and packed, each mouthful will fill you up well. I like the fact there were more ingredients inside than rice, which is a good thing. The Umeshu Special Fried Salmon Roll had a crunchy outer coating, going really well with my tastebuds, as I bite into the raw salmon found inside.

Teppan Gyu Steak - RM18.90
Teppan Gyu Steak - RM18.90

After all that sushi, we moved on to the mains, the first of which made me smile widely. Umeshu's Teppan Gyu Steak tasted as good as it looks, served on a hot plate with accompanying mashed potato. Umeshu's extensive menu gave us so much choices, from teppanyaki and tempura to agemono and yakimono dishes. Shown above, the steak photo was taken before it was drizzled in their homemade garlic black pepper sauce.

Seafood and fish lovers will appreciate the Salmon Kobuto Teriyaki, Saba Shioyaki and Yakitori Squid offerings. All of them are grilled, lightly salted, and barbecued to perfection, preserving its natural sweetness.

Tempura Moriawase - RM15.90

Tempura Mantis Prawn - RM8.90

Umeshu serves some rather nice tempura too, where we got to try their Tempura Mantis Prawn and Tempura Moriawase. We had delectable seafood, vegetables and mantis prawn deep fried to a crisp, yet retaining its freshness inside. Best taken with Umeshu's homemade tempura sauce, dip and enjoy the tempura dishes.

Ishiyaki Salmon Tobiko - RM15.90
Ishiyaki Salmon Tobiko - RM15.90

The Ishiyaki Salmon Tobiko came looking rather pretty with its assorted colours. Served in a hot stone bowl, we had a rather huge piece of salmon and lots of flying fish roe inside. Coupled with fresh egg, stir it all together and enjoy the burst of flavours in your mouth.

Unagi Kamameshi - RM29.90
Unagi Kamameshi - RM29.90

Glazed Japanese eels, lots of it, served with thick teriyaki sauce on a bed of rice with mushrooms. These make up the Unagi Kamameshi dish, which had a very nice flavour to it. I really like how the eels are seasoned with sweet teriyaki sauce, yummy indeed.

Ishiyoki Curry Udon - RM10.90
Ishiyoki Curry Udon - RM10.90

On Umeshu's menu, there are lots of noodle dishes offered as well. We tried their Ishiyoki Curry Udon that evening. One of the bestsellers, or so we're told, this Japanese curry dish was unlike the others I've tried before. It had a spicier note to it, probably to cater for the Malaysian diners who love everything spicy. So the next time you're in the vicinity of Glenmarie Shah Alam, and would like some affordable Japanese cuisine, do remember to check out Umeshu Sushi & Bar.
