Acer announces TravelMate B117 notebook, designed for classroom


Acer in collaboration with Microsoft, has announced the launch of their new TravelMate B117 notebook running Windows 10 Pro, aimed at the education market. It features Acer's TeachSmart solution, that enpowers teachers with tools and cloud-based services to distribute class materials and collect assignment digitally.

The notebook has a ruggedized frame with a rubber strip that frames the chassis and comes with spill resistant keyboard to withstand from bumps and drops, and the daily abuse of classroom use. The cover can withstand up to 60kg of pressure. It also has a hinge that will let you tilt the screen back to 180 degrees so it lies flat against a table, while still allowing you to use the keyboard.

It sports an LED light embedded on the lid that flash in different colors to correspond with answers to question, enabling teachers to see at a glance how kids responded to questions of multiple choice or student can toggle LED light after they have finished an assignment, so that teachers can monitor the progress.


The TravelMate B117 features 11.6-inch display and is powered by Intel Pentium or Celeron Processors, with Intel HD graphics and up to 4GB RAM. It comes with the option of HDD or eMMC storage, and comes with TPM (Trusted Platform Module) for data and device security.

There is also dual digital microphones, an Acer Crystal Eye HD webcam with HDR support and a ruggadized case and split resistant keyboard. For connectvity there is 802.11ac wireless with 2 x 2 MIMO, a USB 3.0 port, USB 2.0 ports, a full-sized HDMI port with HDCP support.

The price and availability of Acer's Travelmate B117 is not known yet, and will vary by region. Since it is aimed education, we can expect to be priced aggressively, similar to that of Chromebooks.
