Apple’s 4-inch iPhone to be called the ‘iPhone 5se’

Apple is preparing to launch a new 4-inch iPhone this spring, reports 9to5Mac. The oft-accurate Mark Gurman claims he has it on good authority that the device, codenamed N69, will publicly be called the “iPhone 5se,” and should begin shipping by March or April.

Gurman says the device that made headlines yesterday, which looked identical in design to Apple’s current smartphones, is a fake, and the real 4-inch iPhone looks a lot like the iPhone 5s. He also notes that contrary to recent rumors, the handset has a headphone jack.
The new device is internally codenamed “N69,” but the launch name will likely be the “iPhone 5se.” The “se” suffix has been described in two ways by Apple employees: as a “special edition” variation of the vintage 4-inch iPhone screen size and as an “enhanced” version of the iPhone 5s. Indeed, the upcoming “5se” features a design similar to 2013’s flagship but upgraded internals, software, and hardware features that blend the old design with modern technologies from the past two iPhone upgrades.
One of the new features, according to the report, is that the iPhone 5se will have the Live Photos feature, something the iPhone 6/6 Plus does not have. This feature alone would put the device at an advantage over the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. Aside from the aforementioned feautres, the 4-inch device is expected to have many features similar to the iPhone 6 including an 8-megapixel camera, an A8 processor, and an NFC chip for Apple Pay support. Color options include rose gold, silver, gold, and space gray just like the iPhone 6/6 Plus and iPhone 6s/6s Plus. The iPhone 5se won’t however have 3D Touch input due to the cost and size of the hardware required.

Previous reports also noted that the new 4-inch device won’t have a plastic backing and instead be in line with the current iPhone 6s and sport a metal enclosure. If this is the case, the device will look and feel more premium. It has also been rumored that Apple will be holding a keynote presentation early this year to announce new products and specifically, the iPhone 5se. We’ll have to wait and see.
