RUMOURS: Manchester United opted to sign Van Persie over Lewandowski
United had a deal in place to sign the Poland international from Borussia Dortmund, but instead they oped to sign the Dutchman, who lasted three seasons at Old Trafford
Manchester United chose to sign Robin van Persie instead of Robert Lewandowski in 2012, according to The Independent.
The report claims that United are still keen on the Poland international but the striker is ready to snub their interest in order to secure a move to Real Madrid once their transfer embargo lifts at the end of next season.
But United already had a deal in place to sign Lewandowski from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2012. Instead, the club opted to lure Van Persie from Arsenal, with the Dutchman firing United to the Premier League title in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final year in charge before leaving at the end of last season to join Fenerbahce.
United were also keen on Lewandowski last summer, with the Bayern striker being Louis van Gaal’s priority attacking target.
