Sketchy rumor claims 4-inch iPhone will be called ‘iPhone 5e’; will come with Apple Pay

The rumored refresh of the four-inch iPhone is widely expected by multiple sources to include Apple’s latest A9 chip with two gigabytes of RAM, but now a new rumor published Monday by Chinese-language MyDrivers is pouring cold water on those claims.

Citing unnamed sources, MyDrivers reports that the iPhone 5e’s biggest selling points will be Apple Pay with NFC compatibility, and VoLTE. It’s is also claimed the iPhone 5e will be available in 16GB and 64GB storage options, with an 8-megapixel camera, A8 processor, and 1GB of RAM.

The sources also say that the iPhone 5e will start at around 3,288 yuan, which is approximately $500 (U.S.). That would make it $150 cheaper than the 16GB iPhone 6s off-contract, but only $50 cheaper than last year’s iPhone 6, which offers a larger, sharper display.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard that Apple’s new 4-inch iPhone will essentially be an iPhone 5s with updated internals. It should be noted, however, that we’ve seen no leaks to back up these claims as of yet, and we highly recommend taking them with a pinch of salt for now.

Prior reports have contended that the device will feature an aluminum-clad chassis with an iPhone 6s-style design and so-called 2D cover glass with curved edges, not unlike the screen on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s series.
