Artist of the Week: Kanye West

Currently untitled, Kanye West's new LP that's due out on February 11 is described as 'a gospel album with a whole lot of cursing on it.'

It sure took long for Kanye West to deliver his new album. Nearly three years after dropping "Yeezus" in 2013, the rapper is ready to dominate the music scene again with what we last knew as "Waves". 

The LP is currently unnamed. It was first announced as "So Help Me God" early last year before getting retitled to "Swish". 'Ye later said he'd call it "Waves", a title that triggered a feud with Wiz Khalifa who called him out on Twitter thinking that it would co-opt the "wavy movement" pioneered by rapper Max B. Most recently, however, he revealed he hadn't set a new title. 

"We don't have a name yet," Kanye said in an interview with Boy Boy on L.A.'s 92.3 radio station. He went on explaining the polls his wife Kim Kardashian recently posted on Twitter, saying, "I wanted to get people's opinions on how they felt." 

In the same chat, Kanye described the highly-anticipated project as a "gospel album." He explained, "When I'm sitting in the studio with Kirk Franklin and we're going through it, I said this is a gospel album with a whole lot of cursing on it. But it's still a gospel album. It's the gospel according the 'Ye. It's not exactly what happened in the bible but it's this story of the idea of Mary Magdalene becoming Mary." 

He also called the album a "dream that can't happen without God." He went on claiming that his late mother Donda West and his wife Kim's late father Robert Kardashian were among people helping him get it done. 

"I'm only doing two percent of the work. God is doing the rest of the work," he said. "My mom had [producer] Teddy Riley change his flight and come back to the studio. Robert Kardashian is making sure that all the deals is getting done. He's still doing deals for controversial black people from up in heaven." 

"Waves", or whatever it will be called in the end, is due out on February 11. It's been preceded by "No More Parties in L.A." that features guest verse from Kendrick Lamar and "Real Friends" with Ty Dolla $ign. 


Kanye has been bragging about the project on social media lately, promising it would be the "best album of all time" before he clarified, out of respect to other big rappers like Tupac Shakur, Dr. Dre and Jay-Z, that it would just be one of many best albums.
