According to a report published on Wall Street Journal, Google is working on a standalone virtual reality headset that will not rely on smartphones and won't need to connect to PCs or Gaming consoles as well, operating more like Microsoft's HoloLens, a standalone augmented reality headset.
The report says that the VR headset will have a screen, outward facing camera and a high-powered processor. Google plans to use chips from Movidius that use the VR headsets cameras feeds to track the motion of the user's head to provide 'middle ground' experience.
The news comes after, a different report that said Google will launch a Gear VR (Samsung) like headset later this year, made out of plastic, but this one will require a smartphone and feature higher quality lenses and improved sensors.
Google is not new to the Virtual Reality space, as the search giant last year introduced the Cardboard VR headset that lets you use your smartphone for virtual reality and 360-degree video experience. At present Oculus (Rift), Samsung (Gear VR), HTC (Vive) and Sony (Project Morpheus) are the companies that will launch their headset later this year. Meanwhile, Google's rival Apple is also said to be working on VR headsets.
