Toy maker Mattel, at the recent New York Toy Fair introduced the ThingMaker 3D Printer. It is basically a reinvented 70s toy maker that uses 3D printing technology. With Mattel's original ThingMaker back in 1960, you had to pour liquid plastic into toy mould, but the new ThingMaker uses 3D printing to create the toys.
The new ThingMaker is more than an ordinary toy maker that could make bug-like creatures or Creepy Crawlers as they were popularly called back in 60s. It can help kids learn 3D designing from an early stage and also engages the child's creativity as it allows them to create a variety of stuffs. They will be able to design, create and print their own toys from start to finish. All of the toys can be customized with different colors and textures.
The ThingMaker 3D printer comes with ThingMaker Design App (Android & iOS), which is developed together with Autodesk. Using the app, you will be able to design complex objects like figurines (robots, dinosaurs), wearable accessories and other gadgets. The app has a rich collection of templates and also assists user to create their own template, once finalized the design can be sent to the ThingMaker 3D printer for creation.
Mattel's ThingMaker 3D printer is priced at $300 (Rs. 20,500) and is available for pre-order on Amazon. You will also be able to purchase a variety of filament color options and additional design content later.
