Apple has just made it easier for many gadget users to trade in their old iPhone for a newer model, and to do so for less than US$ 15 a month in some cases. What’s more, the trade-in handsets can be an Android device or Windows phone as well as an iPhone.
The new program, which will start in a few days, is called Trade Up With Installments, and it builds on Apple's existing iPhone upgrade programs.
First, a quick refresher on current options, which remain in place for eligible consumers who want a new model device every year:
Consumers can pay US$ 32.41 a month interest-free for a 16GB iPhone 6s or US$ 36.58 for the 16GB 6s Plus. They pay the tab for a period of 24 months, with the price covering the phone, the Apple Care+ warranty program, plus the option to upgrade every year if their choose. They still have to pay for wireless service, of course, though they do get to pick their carrier. And monthly fees rise when they get phones with more storage.
Apple also has had a plan where consumers can bring in an older phone, get a credit for it, and, depending on its condition, apply that to a new purchase. In fact, Apple also recently said that anybody can trade in damaged iPhones for credit toward a new model, though the trade-in value on such phones is obviously less.
The brand new Trade Up With Installments program is a combination of the earlier offerings. How much users pay depends on their trade-in scenario — the phone they are giving up and its current condition, and the phone that they are buying.
Anybody can trade in an iPhone dating back as far back to the iPhone 4. they will pay about US$ 15 a month for each step-up in model, with the interest-free term again lasting for 24 months.
For example, if they step up from an iPhone 4 to an iPhone 5s, they will pay US$ 14.58 a month for 24 months. If they move from an iPhone 6 to a 6s, the monthly tab is US$ 14.54. To take the most extreme example, to move from the iPhone 4 to the largest-capacity (128 GB) iPhone 6s Plus, they will pay US$ 35.37 a month.
If the consumer prefer, they can get instant credit in an Apple Store for their old phone instead. The estimated trade-in values is about US$ 100 for an iPhone 4 or 4s, US$ 200 for a 5, 5c or 5s, US$ 300 for an iPhone 6, or US$ 350 for a 6s, again depending on condition.
The trade-in value for non iOS handsets is between US$ 100 and US$ 300.
