Note:Style tips to steal from the eclectic dressers at New York Fashion Week
From sequin splashes to all-white looks and coats with pizzazz, take some transitional style notes from the savvy dressers at New York AW16 Fashion Week...
Pale and interesting just got even paler
To coincide with the snowy landscape show-goers adopted a ‘wardrobe white out’. Looks comprising only cream, beige and white separates.
The sensible dresser inside us can’t help balk at a trend just asking for spillages, scuffs and splashes of rainwater to mar it. But, with numerous New Yorkers managing to look chic in snowy looks, we have deciphered the key to making our own pearly ensembles work. Dark points of interest, such as a black choker, boots or handbag, draw the eye to these punctuation marks rather than your pale complexion.
Pick a coat with personality
We’re talking seriously loud and proud outerwear that’s not for the faint-hearted. Think patterned furs, symmetrical prints, plus denim and leather jackets boasting bold branding.
Such technicolour coats can be relied upon to spruce up the plainest of looks. Maximalists, however, will load on contrasting scarves and accessories to add to the more-is-more aesthetic.
Pussy-bows are getting smaller
Bored of your chiffon pussy-bow tails flapping about in the winter breeze? So are the fash pack, who have decided to downsize the feminine blouse feature.
Take a tip from Caroline Issa and keep bows short and structured. This lends itself to a look that is less beatnik, and leans towards modern tailoring.
Co-ords are something to shout about
Sleek navy separates no longer cut the mustard. Chiming with the zany coat scene, co-ords now involve shouty symmetrical prints that give off a wonderfully retro vibe when splashed on suiting.
Take baby steps toward the trend by muting bright co-ords with a plain jacket worn over the top. Dressing down a look with trainers also helps to divert attention.
Get race-ready
Racing stripes on trousers are the easiest way to tap into the athleisure trend, and can be worn with almost anything.
Try experimenting with contrasting colourways once you are in your stride. Bold primary colours are our favourite sporting flourish.
Hike up hemlines
The sub-zero temperatures didn’t stop NYC’s street stylistas from showing off the fruits of all those Psycle classes in A-line mini skirts.
To tone down the leggy look we recommend pairing short skirts with loafers or preppy low-block heels. This gives off a vibe that’s more Cher Horowitz in Clueless, rather than Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman

Appease your inner magpie
Flashes of sequins and gaudy metallic accessories make for outfits that really sing.
Add surprising pops of glamour to outfits that don’t necessarily require it, but become eye-catching, eclectic ensembles because of it.
Cross-body bags are now worn under coats
Ever the practical thinkers, the fash pack have found a solution to that annoying bag-on-bag-off scenario when going in and outdoors for shows. Simply wear your cross-body bag underneath your jacket and shrug off once indoors!
This might not sound like rocket science, but cross-body bags have replaced bold necklaces as the focal point on looks. See Eva Chen’s below Instagram for further explanation.

Show some cuff love
Letting shirt or sweater cuffs peep out from your coat sleeve is now de rigueur in terms of layering.
A new way to nod to the trend - without mopping up your Pret soup - is to find a jacket with a contrasting coloured cuff to divert attention.
