Samsung Connect Auto with LTE, KNOX security, Tizen OS announced

Google's Android Auto and Apple's CarPlay offers in-car connectivity for new cars, but Samsung is giving older cars a smart upgrade. The South Korean tech giant has announced an affordable connected car solution called Samsung Connect Auto dongle at MWC 2016, Barcelona.

Samsung Connect Auto is powered by Tizen OS, and plugs directly into the vehicles OBD II (On-board diagnostic port), found under the steering wheel, and offers users with car details such real time alerts to improve driving habits and fuel efficiency.

It uses 4G LTE data connection to beam the collected data and location information to a cloud based server where it will be analyzed and used to provide data to the Find My Car app (Android & iOS). The data collected on the cloud are kept secure using Samsung's proprietary KNOX, a 'defense-grade mobile security platform' which the company uses on its Galaxy S series flagship devices.

That 4G LTE connection will also be used to provide Wi-Fi hotspot functions for passengers mobile devices, so that they can stay connected to the internet while on the go.

The  Samsung Connect Auto will be available in Q2 2016 and AT&T is expected to be the first wireless carrier to provide mobile data service.

Other partners include Amdocs, AXA, Blink by Agero, China Unicom, Cisco, Crawford & Company, Ericsson, Europcar, HERE, IBM, Jasper, Oberthur Technologies, Openbay, Tantalum and Willis Towers Watson.
