Facebook owned popular messaging platform WhatsApp announced that it would discontinue its services for older operating systems by the end of this year.
WhatsApp in a blog post said that it will stop supporting smartphones running dated operating system including BlackBerry 10 Nokia S40, Nokia Symbian S60, Android 2.1, Android 2.1 and Windows Phone 7.1.

If you're using devices running the aforementioned operating system WhatsApp suggests "upgrading to a newer Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone" if you want to keep on using the service.
WhatsApp's messaging service that started in 2009, currently has more than one billion active monthly users.
