Review: The Siren

Kahlen is a Siren, living in service to the Ocean. She must serve faithfully for one hundred years if she wishes to regain her freedom. She struggles with the consequences of her duties as a Siren, but knows that if she remains faithful, she has only 20 years remaining before she can return to a normal life.

When Kahlen meets Akinli, she uses her usual methods to discourage his interest, but he manages to overcome her reserve. For the first time, Kahlen struggles to remain distant and silent, even though speaking with Akinli means his certain death.

The Siren is a touching romance with a paranormal edge from Kiera Cass, the author of the best-selling The Selection series. The Siren was actually Cass’s first novel, written before she published the story of America Singer and Prince Maxon, and I’m glad that Cass’s success has meant that this earlier story has had the opportunity to be edited, refined and published.

The incorporation of the siren mythology into this otherwise simple story of forbidden love added an interesting tension to the unfolding drama. Kahlen’s relationship with the Ocean and with her sister Sirens created some interesting conflicts of affection and loyalty.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Siren. It is a light, entertaining romance with the intriguing addition of mythological elements to give the story depth. A fantastic beach or rainy day read.
