Susan Sarandon: Bernie Sanders fans afraid to voice support, fear backlash

Susan Sarandon says some famous Bernie Sanders fans are nervous to voice their support for the presidential hopeful because they fear backlash from their Hollywood pals - or from Hillary.

“You know, there's a lot of people I've talked to who are afraid,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. "They say 'I am definitely supporting him, but I'm afraid to come out' because either I am woman and I don't want to get shamed — because that has been a big part of what the response has been — or they say, 'I am just waiting to see what happens.'"

Brad Blakeman, former member of President George W. Bush’s Senior Staff and Professor of Public Policy, Politics and International Affairs at Georgetown University says he's not surprised.

“Hollywood is a town of hypocrisy and contradiction.  They’ll leave their mansions to protest, fight against the second amendment but be surrounded by gun-toting security guards," Blakeman told FOX411. "They tout the importance of free speech but afraid to do it themselves for fear of political retribution from the Clintons and retribution from their own community."

But former Democratic Congressman Anthony Weiner, who is married to Clinton’s top aide Huma Abedin, said Sanders and Clinton both have their fair share of supporters.

“There are a lot of people supporting Bernie and Hillary," Weiner told FOX411. "We’ll find out."

Indeed Sanders leads Clinton nationally with Democratic voters in the most recent FOX News poll, 47 percent to 44 percent, which makes the Sanders' supporters' supposed reticence even more surprising. Blakeman said the Clintons are a political dynasty who hold great sway in Hollywood.

“They’re so powerful and engrained in the Hollywood apparatus – courting Hollywood’s top executives," he said.

He speculated that Sanders supporters who support in silence do so for their own “selfish interest to protect their livelihoods. So, make your donations and keep your mouth shut.”

While some celebrities may be afraid to speak out in support of Sanders, he does have his share of vocal stars, including like Danny DeVito who tweeted in July, “Bernie Sanders...you're our only hope Obi-Wan Kenobi."  There is also a list of celebrity endorsements on Bernie Sanders.com that includes Anthony Kiedis, Mark Ruffalo, Zoe Kravitz, and Nikki Reed.
