It's not always that I get to dine in a restaurant serving authentic Yemani cuisine, so when given the opportunity to try out Marhaba Restaurant Signature Yemani Cuisine @ Bandar Sunway I snapped at the opportunity. I was there last week to try out their signature dishes, and I must say on top of the very luscious 'rainforest' location, the food is really very interesting.

Now I'm not an expert on middle eastern cuisine, let alone authentic Yemani cuisine, but I do know I'm going to be served some really good grilled meat, curry and the likes. Entering the restaurant it did resemble what you would expect from a high end middle eastern restaurant complete with the decor and music. The food is prepared by Yemen chefs, so you know you're getting the real deal when you dine here.
Shahee Na' Na' (Adeni Tea with mint) - RM18 per pot / RM7 per glass |
Various fruit juices |
While waiting for our dishes to be served we were first offered Marhaba's famous mint tea, aptly named the Shahee Na' Na', which had a rather strong mint flavour to it. It did whet our appetite for the meatier dishes to come. Of course, if you prefer fresh fruit juices, they have a wide array of juices for you to choose, from fresh fruit juices, smoothies, to ice blended drinks.
Lamb Broth Soup |
Freshly cut vegetables with sauces |
Every meal comes with complimentary lamb broth soup and freshly cut vegetables with the accompanied sauces. Served from a drinks pot, I did not realize it was soup until the very helpful staff poured some out in a bowl for us. It was indeed tasty, and we were advised to drink it while its piping hot.
Malauwah (Fresh Yemani Bread) - RM7 (Small), RM12 (Large) |
Saltah Fahsah - RM40 |
The Malauwah or fresh yemani bread was served first, in a 'small' portion which did not seem all that small to me. In fact it was huge! I wonder how big the large portion would be. Fresh from the oven, the yemani bread is akin to 'roti canai' except it's way more special being fluffy yet crispy on some parts. It has that fresh dough taste with some herbs sprinkled on top, going really well with the accompanied Saltah Fahsah, sizzling curry with a choice of either lamb, chicken or fish cooked in a stone pot.
Marhaba Mixed Grill - RM45 |
One of my favourite that afternoon, save for the next subsequent lamb dishes, the Marhaba Mixed Grill has got to be a must-order dish. Served with a combination of Shish Tawook, Shish Kebab, and lamb cubes, each of the meaty parts gave out a very tasty flavour. Dip it into the accompanied sauce which tastes like 'garlic mayonnaise' to me, the flavour is further accentuated. Good stuff here.
Lamb Hanith - RM78 |
Another hot seller and signature dish from Marhaba Restaurant would be their Lamb Hanith. Fresh lamb cooked in tandoor with Marhaba's secret recipe served on top of a bed of rice. Meant to be shared, I did not mind having the whole dish to myself. We were given a choice of either the rib or shoulder part of the lamb, grilled to perfection.
Chicken Mazbi - RM33 |
Chicken Mandi - RM30 |
Both the poultry dishes which arrived next, the Chicken Mazbi and Chicken Mandi looked alike yet is prepared and tasted very different from each other. Chicken Mazbi is this succulent barbequed chicken with fragrant traditional Yemeni spices while the Chicken Mandi is this tender steamed chicken doused in the same spices. I personally prefer the barbequed chicken, but both were equally good.
Grilled King Fish - RM39 |
If you're in the mood for some good fish, do try out Marhaba's Grilled King Fish dish. Similar to the poultry dish, the fish is served on a bed of rice, grilled in fragrant tandoor. The pricing includes soup, salad and sauces on the side.
Honey Tammar - RM22 |
Shahee Mula Ban - RM18/pot , RM7/glass |
We ended our very filling meal at Marhaba Restaurant with a rather sweet dessert, the Honey Tammar. I felt it was too sweet though, but those who love sweet desserts will love this dessert which is made from bread with banana and dates topped with honey and keshta cream. We tried their Shahee Mula Ban, Adeni Tea with milk too, which tasted almost similar to our local teh tarik. Do try out Marhaba Restaurant for authentic Yemeni cuisine the next time you're in the vicinity of Bandar Sunway.
