While a watermark / logo won't protect you from someone stealing your video, it can help to add a source and to show brand / copyright.
Here's how to add a watermark in iMovie version 10 (OS X Yosemite and El Capitan):
1. First thing you'll need is a transparent .PNG version of the logo/image you want to use.
- You can either create, size the image and place it in position in a full video resolution template (eg: Full HD, 1920x1080) and save that as a transparent (no background layer) .PNG file. Or just use an image and resize it in iMovie, which we'll get to later.
2. Import all your files for the project, including your watermark image.
3. Place your video first into the timeline. Do any edits you need.
If you are using a template with the right video resolution with your watermark already sized into the the position you want it in, go to step 5. If you are just using an image of a logo, continue to read the next step.
4. Click on your image in the clips section. Then drag it into the timeline and drop it above your video. Stretch the image on the timeline to cover the entire video (or the part you want to watermark).
- Then click the cropping tool, and select style 'Fit'.
- Now click the 'Video Overlay button'. From the drop down menu, select 'Picture in Picture'. You can now move and resize the image, and adjust other setting like a nice Dissolve fade-in effect. And that's all!
For using a pre-made watermark image in the right video resolution:
5. Drag the watermark image into the video timeline and drop above your video. Stretch the time of the image to cover the entire video (or the part you want to cover with a watermark).
- Then click the cropping tool and set the style to 'Fit'.
- Now click the video overlay button. Leave the drop-down menu on 'Cutaway'. Here you can also adjust other settings like Opacity and Fade effects. And that's all!
