Apple’s Project Titan said to be progressing faster than previously reported

Apple’s self-driving electric car, codenamed Project Titan, is further along than many suspected, reports The Guardian. The publication has obtained documents that show that the Cupertino company is already scouting locations to test the vehicle.

From the report:
“In correspondence obtained by the Guardian under a public records act request, Apple engineer Frank Fearon wrote: “We would… like to get an understanding of timing and availability for the space, and how we would need to coordinate around other parties who would be using [it].“
According to the documents, Apple has shown interest in GoMentum Station, which is a 2,100-acre facility that used to function as a naval base. It has since been converted into a testing facility for self-driving vehicles.

Interestingly enough, the Station’s director, Randy Iwasaki, has stated that Apple is indeed interested in using the track, but he was unable to provide any other details on what that might mean, or what Apple is using the facility for.

There aren’t many other reasons why Apple would need access to a track like this, so even those who don’t believe in Project Titan’s existence, this would seem to shed some light on its possibility, at least. Indeed, reports have surfaced recently that Apple has been looking to refresh talks with BMW to bring Project Titan to life. While this report indicates that progress is moving along much faster than previously reported, earlier reports have suggested that Apple is aiming to start production in 2020.

So what do you think ?
