Everything about Chipset used in Mobile phones.

Now that days are gone where the smartphones are guided by only design and look. The technology in smartphones growing too fast, the one of the best example is 3D gaming, high graphics games, 4k videos and many more. In this session we are going to see Everything about Chipsets.

Let's begin it

:::: SoC (System on Chip) ::::

It consists all components of computer in a single chip. The GPU, CPU, memory controller and other components are also combined in a single chip. The two companies are making this SoC i.e Qualcomm snapdragonNVIDIA Tegra.

The NVIDIA Tegra X1 is latest of all and upcoming Tegra Parker. Now latest TEGRA X1 consist of :
TEGRA X1
GPUNVIDIA Maxwell 256-core GPU DX-12, OpenGL 4.5, NVIDIA CUDA®, OpenGL ES 3.1, and AEP
CPU8 CPU-core, 64-bit ARM® CPU 4x A57 2MB L2; 4x A53 512KB L2
VIDEOH.265, VP9 4K 60 fps Video 4k H.265, 4k VP9, 4k H.264
POWER20 nm SOC - TSMC Isolated Power Rails, Fourth-Generation Cluster Switching
DISPLAY4K x 2K @60 Hz, 1080p @120 Hz HDMI 2.0 60fps, HDCP 2.2

Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 is a latest in the First Segment and it was rumor that Xiaomi Mi5 will powered by Snapdragon 820. Let see what is on the board :

:::: ARM Processor ::::

An ARM processor is one of a family of CPUs based on RISC (reduced instruction set computer) architecture developed by Advanced RISC Machines (ARM)

Now a days all mobile phone, tablets, wireless router, media players, gaming consoles and many other products of computer are designed by ARM processor. So ARM processor is the heart of all technology products that are been designed.

Just like Intel and AMD, ARM is a 32-bit microprocessor originally created by Acorn Computers back in 1987. Since then, ARM has been using quite different architecture as compared to Intel and AMD . More companies are preferring this architecture as it uses microchip and low cost.
ARM architecture is the licensable so many company can obtains the architecture and can do the customization according to them.

ARM processors are extensively used in consumer electronic devices such as Smartphones, tablets, multimedia players and other mobile devices, such as wearables. Because of their reduced instruction set, they require fewer transistors, which enables a smaller die size for the integrated circuit (IC). The ARM processor's smaller size, reduced complexity and lower power consumption makes them suitable for increasingly miniaturized devices.

Here some of the ARM version are used ARMv7, ARM9, ARM11, Cortex A8, Cortex A9 and Cortex A15 & Cortex A53 (Widely used). Cortex A72 is the latest of all. Companies like Apple, Samsung, NVIDIA, Texas instruments simply chooses one of these design and add there own GPU & some other components into a single chip.

However companies like SoC manufacturers uses there own design CPU rather than go with the crowd. Kryo and heterogeneous computing is the latest new designed by Qualcomm which is used in the Snapdragon 820 SoC.

:::: Types of GPU ::::

The graphics are made by various vendors which gives flexibility to the company to select perfect GPU for a chip. Today GPUs are the most essential part to play Advanced Gaming, 3D Rendering and watching 4K-videos and more.

Here are some different types of GPUs:

1. ARM Mali

ARM Mali is introduced by the ARM. Mali GPU doesn't have in built display controller like others and have to dive into display. It offers pure 3D engine which does the job of rendering the graphics into memory. The most popular chips are Mali-400MP, Quad core GPU (used in Samsung Exynos and ST-Ericsson's novaThor.).

2. Qualcomm Adreno

After retaining the Image on title by AMD, Qualcomm has given own name Adreno which has been used in Snapdragon SoC. The most popular chips are Adreno 306, 320, 420, 430, 505, 510, & Adreno 530 which is latest one.

3. Imagination PowerVR

PowerVR GPUs are not manufactured by the Power imagination itself, they license the design to the companies like Samsung, Apple, and Intel. There products are quite popular and features in many commercial products.

4. NVIDIA Tegra GPU

NVIDIA developed these graphics chips in-house and till now, only feature in their own Tegra SoC. Their latest Tegra X1 SoC ups the ante by offering a 256-core GPU making it roughly many times powerful than its predecessor.
