Qualcomm has announced the Snapdragon Wear, a new platform for next generation wearable devices. The Snapdragon Wear 2100 is the first SoC from the Snapdragon Wear line-up designed and built for wearable. It replaces the Snapdragon 400 system chip and promises sleek form factor, enhanced connectivity and processing feature, while improving the battery life of wearables.
The Snapdragon Wear 2100 will arrive in two versions – tethered (relying on Bluetooth and WiFi to connect with smartphone) and connected (4G LTE and 3G - and doesn't rely on smartphone for activities). The connected version features an on-board LTE modem, low-power Bluetooth and low-power WiFi, and allows users to use their wearable completely, even without the need of a smartphone. This means you can stream music, answer calls and reply to messages directly from the wearable device.
There are four key areas, where the Snapdragon Wear 2100 brings significant improvement over the Snapdragon 400-
The Snapdragon Wear line of wearable will fully support Android Wear platform. Qualcomm said that the Snapdragon 2100 SoC would be the focal point of the Snapdragon Wear platform, the offers a complete suite of software, support and chipsets for wearable manufacturers worldwide. The chipmaker also said that the Snapdragon 2100 SoC is designed for wearables in the mobile, fashion and sports segment. The new platform is not only suited for smartwatches, but for fitness tracker (wrist band), smart eyewear, connected headsets and more.

LG will be the first OEM which will utilise the Snapdragon 2100 SoC in its new wearable lineup. The company will use the processor for manufacturing its wearable later this year, promising more innovative use of wearable device to customers. U.S based Telecom operator AT&T has also pledged support the Snapdragon Wear platform, with the aim of creating a seamless ecosystem for connecting wearable to each other.
