His reasoning was that because of his wife’s supposed insignificance in the world of paparrazis, the attention focused on him didn’t double when he got married… it simply stayed static. Damon met his wife while shooting a movie in Miami, Stuck on You in 2003, when he popped into the bar where Barroso worked. The rest is history.

She had already agreed to marry Robert, the son of New York theater tycoon, Eric Nederlander, but that only lasted four months. A year later the go-getting PR married Seinfeld, and the couple now have three kids and, by all accounts are happily married.

The three-times Academy Award-winning actress Meryl Streep appears to have one of the strongest marriages in Hollywood. Now aged 66, she has been married to sculptor, Don Gummer since 1978, and the couple has four children. Introduced by Meryl’s brother Harry, the Gummers had a quiet wedding ceremony, and they have kept their relationship to themselves. Streep had previously been in a two-year relationship with actor John Cazale who died of lung cancer shortly after filming of The Deer Hunter, in which she also starred, was complete. It would be interesting to know what would have happened had she married this celebrity (Cazale) rather than an “ordinary” person like Gummer – though Gummer is clearly talented in a different way.

When American actor, Chris O’Donnell aka Robin (as in Batman and Robin) met his wife Caroline Fentress, they were both “ordinary” people studying at Boston College. While Caroline became a teacher, O’Donnell found a life as an actor that thrust him into the limelight as a successful celebrity. He has featured in more than 50 TV series and movies, Most recently appearing as himself in Who Do You Think You Are? O’Donnell, now 45, and his wife have five children.

The son of showbiz parents and brother of actor Beau Bridges, Jeff Bridges is a successful American actor, singer and producer. He met his wife, former waitress Susan Geston in 1974 while shooting Rancho Deluxe. The story goes that because she had black eyes and a broken nose, he figured she was the victim of domestic abuse. In fact she had been in a car accident. She is said to have resisted his overtures at first, but eventually they both agreed it would be a good match. They have three children from the marriage.

American actress Elizabeth Banks met her husband-to-be, Max Handelman at the University of Pennsylvania where they both studied in the early 1990s. While the couple dated through college, it wasn’t until 2003 that they married – and this was after her film debut (albeit in low-budget productions). Handelman is a mere mortal in the form of a sportswriter and producer! He is also Jewish, and Banks is partway through the process of converting to his faith. They have two children carried by a surrogate mother.

American actor, screenwriter, producer, and sometime activist, Vince Vaughn was once romantically attached to actress Jennifer Aniston – but he ended up marrying a Canadian real estate agent, Kyla Weber. Some find it pertinent that Vaughn and Aniston broke up shortly after they had completed the movie The Break Up in which they both starred. Vaughn and Weber were married in 2010 and the couple have two children. So maybe it’s better for celebs to marry commoners. Who knows?
