Hot on the heels of their surprising iOS 9.1 jailbreak announcement Friday morning, the Pangu Team has now announced on Twitter that they will be releasing a jailbreak for Apple TV 4 running tvOS 9.0 or 9.0.1 next week.
The jailbreak will only provide SSH access with no GUI-based features and is mainly aimed at jailbreak developers and security researchers. With that said, this should still be considered as a good news as it opens the door for new modifications and improvements to the Apple TV. For instance, jailbreak developers could provide a way for users to theme the interface of Apple TV apart from enjoying new features.
If your Apple TV has already been updated to tvOS 9.1 or 9.1.1 then you’re out of luck because the new Pangu jailbreak will support only those Apple TVs that are running tvOS 9.0 or 9.0.1. Unfortunately, just like iOS, you can’t downgrade to an older version of tvOS.
If you’re not sure which firmware version your Apple TV is running then simply head to the general settings and check it from there.
And for those wondering, tvOS is similar to iOS in the way that it doesn’t allow you to downgrade to a specific software version, unless that version is still being signed by Apple.
